Carbohydrates
are varieties of sugar compounds that are produced naturally by plants
from carbon dioxide and water. They supply us with energy and are used
in the production of fats. There are three main classes: single
sugars[fructose
and
glucose]
double sugars [lactose,
maltose, and
sucrose]
and the complex sugars of
starch
[our staple food and found in root vegetables and cereals]
dextrin
[used mainly for industial starch], glycogen
[starch found in in animal tissue] and
cellulose
[also known as fibre] |
